A Journey to The Past with
Cappadocia’s Mystic Atmosphere
Cappadocia, the capital of the mystery and mystical world, deserves the definition of living art with its millions of years of natural history and thousands of years of human history. Fairy chimneys have emerged as a result of the lava and ashes erupted by volcanic mountains with wind and rain for millions of years. When the mystical thoughts of ancient people were added to these natural wonders, they created one of the most mysterious settlements on our planet. Cappadocia has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985 and its historical texture is preserved.
Cappadocia has been geography that brought civilizations together since ancient times. It has been the reason for preference throughout history with its fairytale appearance and geological structure and many civilizations have inhabited it. The history of the first people who settled in the region dates back to the paleolithic period. Cappadocia, which was not suitable for a period of time due to the destruction caused by active volcanoes, once again embraced humanity when entering the neolithic age. As a result of archaeological studies, we can clearly see how old the history of Cappadocia was, with the stone tools of the neolithic period.
Roman and Byzantine Period
During the first centuries of AD, the Roman and Byzantine Empires left a mark on Cappadocia's unique history. Military and trade routes that will extend around Anatolia were built in this period and enriched the conditions economically for the people living here. With the spread of Christianity, monasteries and churches started to be built in this period. Surrounding community escaping from persecution have taken refuge in the rocks and expanded the construction of a new world. Obviously, people hiding behind the fairy chimneys developed the region over time and gave us the works whose ruins date back and to the present.
Seljuks Period
The Seljuks, who opened the door of Anatolia to Turks with the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, started the sovereignty of Turks in Cappadocia, where Christians lived for centuries. Thus, Muslim and Christian peoples coexisted, providing evidence that two different cultures can live with latitude.
Ottoman Empire
Finally, Cappadocia, which came under the auspices of the Ottoman, experienced its safest and magnificent period in history. Many historical places were built during the Ottoman Empire and zoning arrangements were made in the region, which was previously a small town.
The mystery of Cappadocia above ground and underground is revealed more and more every day. Historians and archaeologists who come to Nevsehir (Nevşehir) from all over the world open the door of the mystical world and inform the modern people.
However, no matter how much time passes, no matter how much research is done, Cappadocia seems to hide from us until the end of life. In addition to its natural advantages, you can always find the trace of a different civilization under each stone in Cappadocia, which is located in the middle of trade routes.
